RAH: In an article entitled The World's Best Science Fiction, Chosen By Scientists, the website lifehacker, has several scifi reading recommendations, starting with the classic juvenile novel Time for the Stars by Robert A. Heinlein. Bryan Gaensler, an astronomer at the University of Toronto praises the novel's handling of Einstein’s special theory of relativity in clear understandable descriptions.
TREKKIE TIME: There used be lots of Star Trek conventions back before everyone and his brother (or sister) was starting up a new Comic Con. Well, the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek television series will be marked in an old school style Trekkie (or Twekker) convention in New York this September 2 to 4, 2016. Star Trek: Mission New York will start at the Javits Center just 218 days from today.
ROTOSCOPING INCOMPLETE: The sequel to the Avatar cartoon movie was originally scheduled for release for Christmas 2016. James Cameron has moved the release date to Christmas 2017.
SOMETHING: Do you like artsy Broadway stage plays? Me neither. However, if you attend BroadwayCon this week at the New York Hilton Midtown, you'll have a chance to meet special guest Andy Mientus. Andy played the part of the Pied Piper in the CW network's scifi/superhero/comicbook character series The Flash.
NOT WISCON: The Huffington Post carried a report on the latest entry into the crowded filed of science fiction conventions. The con, to be known as WiSHCon (Women in Sci-Fi and Horror Convention), will feature mobile mammography units and discussions of female astronauts.
NOT ROME: The first annual one-day Holy City Comic Con takes place at the Memminger Auditorium in Charleston, South Carolina this Saturday, January 23, 2016. From 11am to 3pm there will be a free vendor expo that is open to the public. From 7pm to 11pm the Holy City Comic Con will have a cosplay event and an open bar. That part of the convention is NOT free. See their website for prices.
KW TRI-CON: The Kitchener-Waterloo anime, comics and gaming convention, aka Tri-Con, is this weekend, Saturday, January 16, and Sunday, January 17, 2016, at 10 King Street, West Kitchener, Ontario. There will be a Ware Remix Party and a Dart of War Nerf Gun Battle during the con.
SCIENTIST FICTION: Bill Nye will perform his global warming act at the Magic City Comic Con this weekend. The three-day convention runs January 15 to 17 at the Miami Airport Convention Center.
