Researchers at The University of Manchester (England) and Central South University (Changsha, China) have developed an ablation-resistant carbide ceramic coating for use on spacecraft and hypersonic aircraft. The coating could provide space ship protection to temperatures up to 3,000°C, allowing multiple reentries without the need of ceramic tile replacements. By contrast, before Barack Obama terminated America's ability to launch manned spacecraft, the space shuttle's thermal protection system (TPS) provided protection up to 1,650 °C.
