BURGERBOTS: The Los Angeles Business Journal reports that a survey by the Los Angeles County Business Federation (BizFed) found that 59% of Los Angeles area businesses are considering the increased use of automation as a response to higher minimum wage mandates. In Los Angeles County, where the Board of Supervisors has recently imposed a $15 an hour minimum wage to be phased in incrementally through a series of increases over the next five years, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti noted that the increased costs of labor due to higher minimum wages that developmentally disabled workers were especially at risk to have their jobs performed by automated systems.
Robots and robotic systems are common elements in science fiction predictions of a technologically advanced future, but in the real world technology is not the sole driver of automation. Increasingly, the development of robotics may result from troubled economic conditions and as unintended consequences of poor and unrealistic government.
