MERRY PERRYS: Former Hugo Award winner Paolo Bacigalupi has written a predictable piece of dystopian posturing dressed up as science fiction. Of course, all of his stuff is dystopian, so that's no surprise. However, his pandering to the left is arguably more blatant than usual.
In his novel The Water Knife, Arizona is invaded by the ideological descendants of Governor Rick Perry, as the result of - wait for it - Global Warming! The mob, known as Merry Perrys, makes money along the way by selling "faith trinkets" out of "revival tents," while smug scientists laugh at their belief that Jesus walked on water. That kinda religious and political bigotry should make the novel a shoo-in for award.
